Republicans Are Attempting to Deny Birth Control and Sexually Transmitted Disease Treatment Funding in New Legislation

In what appears to be a case of trying to punish those who have sex, Republicans have re-introduced legislation that would effectively cut off access to birth control for millions of women and prevent many of them from receiving treatment for STDs.

The previous version of H.R. 354 received attention from all around the world, but ultimately no action was taken on it when the last session of Congress ended. Republicans have reintroduced the Defund Planned Parenthood Act in a Congress that is much more favorable to them, along with a president who may be more than willing to sign it into law.

This bill would wipe out women’s healthcare services to tens of millions of women in the U.S. in an instant.

It’s a clear case of cutting off the hose to spite the face. Planned Parenthood does provide abortion services but it is a very small part of a much larger program to keep women healthy. With this bill, Republicans are saying “If we can’t have it exactly the way we want, nobody is going to have it”. They feel emboldened to push it through again in more favorable legislative conditions.

People will die if this bill is passed. Not just from self-abortions gone wrong, but from the lack of STD treatments. Providing a safe, affordable space for women to get medical treatment and birth control keeps everyone healthy.
